Karina Gil, Ph.D., MSW
Dr. Karina Gil is the director of the Worden School of Social Service and an associate professor of social work at OLLU. As the director, she oversees the Bachelor of Social Work, Master of Social Work, and Social Work Ph.D. programs. Prior to her academic work, Gil worked 10 years as a political social worker with diverse populations in coalition building, managing multi-city campaigns, grassroots and community organizing, and policy efforts.
Her expertise includes multicultural competence, community organizing, conflict resolution, issues affecting Latinos, women, and other minorities, acculturation, online education, leadership, and access to power. Gil is passionate about women’s access to positions of power and leadership, and online education. She has published articles and book chapters and routinely presents at multiple national and international conferences.
Gil has a Doctor of Philosophy in Leadership Studies from Our Lady of the Lake University, a Master of Social Work with political concentration from the University of Houston, and a Bachelor of Arts from St. Mary’s University. She is also a certified mediator.
In 2015, Gil was awarded a Wiley Faculty Fellowship. Fellows are selected nationally and share in a distinguished record of accomplishment in their profession and enthusiasm for new pedagogical and technological approaches to their instruction. In 2017, she was selected for the CSWE Program Director Academy, and in 2018 she received the Agnes M. (Lehman) Gloyna Award for Technology Innovation in Teaching and Learning.
