Advanced Integrative Seminar I

Demonstrate your capacity to care for clients.

You will take SOWK 7157 Advanced Integrative Seminar I in conjunction with the first eight weeks of your field education, during which you will concentrate on social work practice with Hispanic children and families. Through this course, you will have the opportunity to demonstrate that you have attained the core competencies required by the National Association of Social Workers (NASW).

Course Description

Through this seminar, you will take part in a supervised field education experience, following a plan for achieving your practicum goals and professional growth. You will become familiar with the National Association of Social Workers’ Standards for Cultural Competency and explore how your own values and beliefs might affect relationships with people who are different from you.

You will see how agency practices might impede or promote minority status clients’ access to or interest in using services. At the same time, you will become aware of perspectives and theories used to plan and guide culturally competent intervention, especially in practice with Hispanic populations.

In your field placement, you will determine which social policies most directly affect Hispanic clients and identify changes that could improve services for that population. Clients’ communities play a role in your interaction with those you help, and you will have an opportunity to address social issues in Hispanic communities, including resources and needs. As you apply strategies of ethical reasoning learned in your coursework, you will try to arrive at principled decisions.

How can the community serve as informants and resources in developing your practice with Hispanic clients?
