Cullen Grinnan, Ph.D.

Associate Professor, Counseling


Cullen Grinnan, Ph.D., is a tenured Associate Professor with the Education Department of Our Lady of the Lake University. Grinnan initiated the Online School Counseling Program in 2010 and served as the Program Coordinator until 2016. He currently serves as the Coordinator for Clinical Mental Health and continues to develop and teach counseling classes in the online formats.

Grinnan served as a Licensed Professional Counselor and an LPC Board-Approved Supervisor from 1995 until 2015. He retains his status as a National Certified Counselor and currently serves as the Title IX Deputy Coordinator for Our Lady of the Lake University. He has served as a member of the American Red Cross Disaster Mental Health Services team, and as a staff therapist for Abiding Presence Lutheran Church in San Antonio, Texas.

Grinnan maintains active membership in the American Counseling Association, the Association of Counselor Educators and Supervisors, the Association for Adult Development and Aging, the Texas Counseling Association, the Texas School Counselors Association, and the South Texas Counseling Association. He served STCA in a number of positions over the years, including serving as Chapter President in 2013 and 2014.

Grinnan has presented to audiences at the local, state and national levels. His research interests include professional counselor identity and development, at-risk youth identification and intervention, perceptions of the online learning experience, career awareness and exploration for underserved populations, and the assessment and management of traumatic emotional experiences.

A product of Catholic Higher Education, Grinnan earned his Baccalaureate, Master of Arts, and Ph.D. from Saint Mary's University, with a specialization in Counselor Education and Supervision.
