School Counseling Career Outlook

School counselors are a vital part of student success, offering educational guidance, mental health support, and assistance preparing for their future — whether that means applying to colleges or entering the job market.

Helping students can also mean a flourishing career in counseling. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, school and career counselors earned a median annual salary of $55,410 in 2017, with the top 10 percent earning more than $91,960.1 Growth for these types of positions is strong, with opportunities projected to grow by 13 percent between 2016 and 2026.2

School counselors work in a variety of educational settings including public, private, and charter institutions in the K-12 system, or in colleges and universities. While most school counselors spend the majority of their time helping students in a school office environment, counselors often engage with other departments, classroom settings, or even find employment at the school district level.

You'll be positioned to help students of all kinds succeed in these types of school counseling job roles:

  • College counselor
  • Career counselor
  • Junior college instructor
  • K-12 public school counselor
  • K-12 private school counselor
