Foundation Integrative Seminar I

IT fulfill the requirements of the foundation portion of the MSW program, you will spend 450 hours in the field. SOWK 6157 Foundation Integrative Seminar I is the first of a three-part sequence that occurs consecutively across three terms. In this course, you will complete assignments that integrate the generalist knowledge, skills and values you will have learned in foundation courses with the experiences and observations gained through your field education.
Course Description
While you are enrolled in SOWK 6157, you will be working in a social work environment to fulfill this program’s practicum requirement. Throughout the term, you will analyze your real-world experiences and connect them with the content of your coursework through weekly assignments. You will first assess your readiness for field placement and consider how you can reduce or eliminate factors that may inhibit your success. Working in a supervised social work environment, you’ll gain an appreciation for different types and styles of supervision. Become familiar with the inner workings of a social services agency and understand how agencies communicate to a broad range of stakeholders. You will learn to identify the sources and types of danger most often encountered in social work practice and see how agency policies and procedures, combined with your own precautions and preventive actions, can reduce risk and protect staff and clients.
Assignment Example
As you begin your 450-hour practicum, you will complete a self-assessment of your strengths as they relate to the practice of social work. You will complete the same assessment at the end of your practicum to identify areas of improvement.

Through SOWK 6157, you will gain a better understanding of topics specific to professional social work identity, values and ethics, diversity, human rights, social and economic justice, and cultural competence with emphasis on Hispanic families and children.
- Recognize personal values, biases and stereotypes as they influence social work with diverse populations.
- Explain knowledge of the agency context within which professional social work practice occurs.
- Illustrate integration of micro and mezzo concepts and theories learned in the classroom with practice at the field education site.
- Demonstrate knowledge of the NASW Code of Ethics and your state’s Social Work Code of Ethics, and agency-based code of ethics as applicable.
