Course Length: 8 weeks
This course focuses on key concepts and methods essential for entrepreneurs. Topics covered include the elements of new venture initiation as well as strategies for small and growing organizations. You will prepare a business plan for an entrepreneurial venture of your choice — possibly for a new venture you are considering.
Coursework is designed for engagement and collaboration. Here is an example of just some of the assignments and projects you will complete as part of MGMT 8315.
- Read various case studies and submit written reviews.
- Discuss entrepreneurship challenges with classmates.
Throughout the course, each week focuses on a different theme. Group discussions and coursework will align with that week’s theme, as well as its primary objectives.
Week 1 – Introduction to Entrepreneurship
At the beginning of the course, you will study various entrepreneurship theories, concepts, and terms, and assess a start-up venture and business enterprise.
Week 2 – Resources and Business Model Development
During week two you’ll explore the environment for entrepreneurship. Learn about success factors and failure factors.
Week 3 – Strategies for Entrepreneurship
In week three you’ll study entrepreneurship strategies and enterprise behavioral characteristics.
Week 4 – Mid-Term Comprehensive Exam
Week four is the midpoint of the term. During this week you take an exam on material covered in the course thus far.
Week 5 – Opportunity Theory and Marketing New Venture
In week five you will examine how to market the new venture and describe foundations for new venture finance.
Week 6 – Venture Funding and Entrepreneurial Risk and Assessment
Week six focuses on how to secure investors, structure the deal and create the organization.
Week 7 – Corporate Ventures and Business Climate
During week seven you will learn about entrepreneurship and corporate venturing, and discuss business climate risk. You will also complete your business plan during week seven.
Week 8 – Comprehensive Exam
The course concludes in week eight with an exam on material covered throughout the entire duration of the course.
